THIS BUSINESS BEGAN WITH A SADDLE, A WHIP AND THE BACKING OF A LOCAL FARMER
Bishop & Co. commenced business in the early 1940s at 91 Magellan Street,
Lismore, selling Rawleigh Veterinary Products. Mr Wally Bishop was the original
proprietor, after leaving the employ of the Tick Department. His total assets at
the commencement of the business were a saddle, a whip and the backing of a
local farmer.
Shortly after the commencement of the business he began selling calves at the
Lismore Saleyards, building the business up to the stage where he was selling
the largest number of calves at the weekly sales on the North Coast.
Wally Bishop continued the business until October 1959 when he sold out to Athol
Rogers and the late Arthur Haynes. The business continued to grow under their
management and expanded into selling cattle, pigs and also real estate,
especially rural properties.
Bishop & Co. commenced selling calves in Bangalow in 1964. This weekly sale
continued until the 30th June, 2000, A decision to close this sale was made
because of the dwindling numbers being offered and the changes in the type of
calves and veal being marketed on the North Coast and the deregulation of the
dairy industry.
1st July, 1986 saw a new era begin for Bishop & Co. when it saw another change
in ownership, this time being purchased by Ron Chittick and Lance Garrett. This
partnership continued until the death of Lance in a car accident on 16th
December, 1988. Shortly afterwards Gary Jarrett joined the business as a
Director.

Up until May 1997 Bishop & Co. traded out of 91 Magellan Street, Lismore. A
change of office to 95 Magellan on the corner with Keen Street has now given
